Calf Implants

INTRODUCTION

Beautiful legs in both men and women have a harmonious relationship between the size of the calf as it compares to that of the upper leg. A well defined calf musculature also adds to this beauty.  For those individuals troubled by disproportionately thin lower legs and a poorly developed calf muscle the solution is calf augmentation.

A surgically inserted Silicon implant shaped to the dimensions of calf muscle immediately enlarges the lower leg and corrects the problem. These implants are constructed of soft but solid silicon that mimic perfectly the feel of the calf.

Procedure

Calf augmentation is an outpatient surgical procedure that can be performed under a spinal or general anesthetic requiring 1.5 hours of operating room time.  Chicago Plastic Surgeon, Dr. David A. Ross works through a 3 to 4 inch incision made in the crease behind the knee those results in a scar. A space to house the implant is created above the two heads of the calf muscle called the gastrocnemias. The surgeon inserts one or two implants per calf depending on whether one or both muscle heads are augmented.  A pressure bandage is applied to the lower legs.

Patients can walk immediately but require analgesics to control what is usually moderately severe pain. Showering is permitted in 24 to 48 hours post operatively. Sutures usually dissolve spontaneously. Vigorous athletic activities must be postponed for approximately one month. There is usually very little bruising but some swelling leaving the final leg shape in doubt for several months.

RISKS AND POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS

Post operative infections and bleeding can occur but are rare. Implant mal-position can occur requiring a repositioning operation. Very rarely, muscle damage can result from implant pressure requiring immediate re-operation to relieve this pressure.
